What we do

What is the PhD Convent?

The convent is the representation of all the faculty's PhD students.

Who is the convent?

All registered PhDs of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy are part of the convent. They can (but do not have to) actively take part. If you would like to contribute to our work by organising an event,... or just get updated about university politics, you are very welcome to contact us or join our monthly meetings.

How is the convent organised?

There are 3 – 5 elected representatives who do most of the regular work. We meet once a month to discuss the situation for PhDs and the most important topics from the various committees we are involved in, as well as to organise events for PhDs. Our rules of procedure include a plenary meeting of all PhDs once a semester where we inform about our work. During these meetings the board of representatives is formally elected.

All students have the right to vote their deputies for the senate and faculty council once a year during general university elections.

What are the convents tasks?

Our main task is the political representation of the interests of PhD students at faculty and university level. For this purpose, we are in exchange with the responsible persons at our faculty. Some members of the board of representatives are also elected members in different committees of our faculty. Together with the convents from other faculties, we form the joint working committee (Gemeinsamer Arbeitsausschuss, GAA) which meets monthly.

Furthermore, we promote the communication between PhD students. For this purpose, we organise networking events and excursions for PhDs.

What are our goals?

Our goal is to improve the situation of PhDs and increase the exchange between doctoral candidates from different areas of the faculty. We want to be a contact point for you if you have questions or encounter problems regarding your rights and obligations as a PhD student and employee of the university.

And, of course, we want to keep you informed about what is happening at the university which is relevant for you.

How are PhDs represented at the university?

PhD candidates have a voice in many important councils and committees in the university. The following diagram gives you an overview of where we are represented:

All PhD candidates of a faculty form the PhD Convent. They are invited once a semester to elect their PhD representatives who then nominate candidates for the faculty council which is the most important committee on the faculty level. They also take part in the joint working committee which, amongst others, nominates candidates for one of the highest committees of the university – the senate.

Where are PhD-students represented?

Senate: Executive decisions for the entire university.

Faculty council: Executive decisions for the entire faculty.

GAA: Assembly for convents of each faculty.

Additionally we are involved in inter-universitary representative meetings for Baden-Württemberg.
